A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to pray the Rosary
step by step

The complete order of prayers for a five-decade Rosary, the exact words of every prayer, and which Mysteries to pray on which day.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles' Creed, one Our Father, three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be with the Fatima Prayer. Then, for each of the five Mysteries of the day, announce the Mystery and pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, one Glory Be and one Fatima Prayer. Finish with the Hail Holy Queen, the closing prayer and the Sign of the Cross. A five-decade Rosary is commonly prayed in about twenty minutes.

THE WORDS

The prayers of the Rosary

The full text of each prayer, exactly as Corona Gloriae prays it.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. May the divine assistance remain always with us. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

GOOD TO KNOW

Where practice varies

Rosary customs differ a little from place to place. These are the points where the order in this guide may differ from the one you learned.

The Fatima Prayer

Corona Gloriae prays the Fatima Prayer after every Glory Be, including the Glory Be that ends the opening prayers. Many Rosary guides place it only at the end of each decade, and some omit it. Follow your own tradition if it differs.

After the Hail Holy Queen

Some prayer books add a short versicle and response after the Hail Holy Queen. The sequence in this guide goes straight from the Hail Holy Queen to the closing prayer, and then to the Sign of the Cross.

Announcing each Mystery

Before the Our Father that opens each decade, Corona Gloriae announces the Mystery by name, with its Scripture passage and its fruit, so that you know what you are meditating on.

PRAY IT WITH CORONA GLORIAE

Pray this exact sequence, aloud, with the app

Corona Gloriae prays this exact sequence aloud, prayer by prayer, with recorded human voices: two priests and two nuns, in English and Spanish. Continuous mode is hands-free: it reads each prayer and moves to the next on its own, and you can choose a speed from 0.5x to 1.5x.

It installs on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone as a web app (PWA) straight from your browser. It is not listed in the App Store or Google Play. There is a 7-day free trial, and the recorded human voices are included in the trial and the Pro plans.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Praying the Rosary: common questions

Quick answers about the order, the Mysteries and the prayers.

Which Mysteries do I pray on which day?

Following the weekly schedule of Rosarium Virginis Mariae, pray the Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday, the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday, and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday. Corona Gloriae opens on the set for the day and lets you choose any of the four sets.

What is the Fatima Prayer, and do I have to pray it?

The Fatima Prayer is a short prayer said after the Glory Be at the end of each decade: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen." It is associated with the apparitions at Fatima in 1917. Corona Gloriae includes it; some people pray the Rosary without it, so follow your own tradition.

Do I need rosary beads to pray the Rosary?

No. Beads are only a help for counting the prayers. You can keep count on your fingers, or follow a guide that counts for you. Corona Gloriae shows a bead counter on screen and announces each Hail Mary in order, so you can pray the whole Rosary without a physical rosary.

How long does it take to pray the Rosary?

A five-decade Rosary is commonly prayed in about twenty minutes. In Corona Gloriae the exact length is up to you: the narration speed is adjustable from 0.5x to 1.5x, and in Manual mode you advance yourself, resting on each prayer as long as you wish.

How many Hail Marys are in a Rosary?

A five-decade Rosary has 53 Hail Marys: three in the opening prayers and ten in each of the five decades. The sequence in this guide also has six Our Fathers and six Glory Bes, one of each in the opening prayers and one of each in every decade.

Can I pray the Rosary along with audio?

Yes. Corona Gloriae reads every prayer aloud in recorded human voices and, in Continuous mode, moves from prayer to prayer on its own, so you can pray along hands-free. You can slow the narration to 0.5x or speed it up to 1.5x. The recorded human voices are included in the 7-day free trial and the Pro plans.
